When we think about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, one of the most profound lessons he left us with is the principle of self-determination. Dr. King believed deeply in the right to define oneself, to live authentically, and to stand up for one’s values no matter the opposition. His unwavering commitment to this principle transformed lives, reshaped communities, and changed history.
But what does self-determination have to do with visibility in your business? The answer is: everything.
Are You Letting Others Define You?
In my book, The Ten Principles of Visibility, I dedicate an entire chapter to the importance of self-determination. It’s about defining yourself for yourself—deciding who you are, what you stand for, and how you want to show up in the world. Why is this so critical? Because if you don’t decide, someone else will. And when others define you, it’s rarely to your benefit.
Dr. King once said, “If you’ve got nothing worth dying for, you’ve got nothing worth living for.” He wasn’t talking about material things. He was talking about the courage to stand up for who you are and the values you hold dear. That same courage is required when it comes to visibility.
Too often, I hear from women who feel invisible in their businesses. They’re doing the work, but they’re afraid to truly show up and let themselves be seen. Why? Because of fear:
- Fear of judgment: What if people don’t like what I have to say?
- Fear of rejection: What if I put myself out there and no one responds?
Or they think I’m not good enough? - Fear of failure: What if I try and it doesn’t work?
These fears are real, but they’re not the boss of you. During the civil-rights movement they had very real fears to face – like what if the bus on set on fire, what if the dogs were sent to attack, what if I end up in jail – and yet they did it anyway. Because self-determination is about reclaiming your power, choosing authenticity over fear, and deciding that your voice—and your unique gifts—are worth sharing regardless of the obstacles or opposition that would stand in your way.
What Does Self-Determination Look Like in Visibility?
Dr. King’s legacy of self-determination teaches us three powerful lessons about showing up authentically:
1. Define Yourself For Yourself.
Don’t let anyone else define who you are, or what you’re capable of.
Dr. King inspired millions by helping them see their worth and demand respect against unimaginable odds. Invisibility begins when you let others determine your value. Take ownership of your narrative:
- Write down your unique value proposition. Who are you? Who do you help? How do you serve them? Get crystal clear on your message so that no one else defines who you or what you do.
2. Set Boundaries That Protect Your Authenticity & Truth
Dr. King wasn’t afraid to take a stand, even when it was unpopular or dangerous. Similarly, you need to set boundaries in your business that reflect your values. Don’t bend to trends or tactics that feel inauthentic:
- Let go of practices that don’t align with who you are. Whether it’s a marketing strategy that feels sleazy or a client relationship that drains you, choose to operate in a way that honors your truth.
Take Bold Action, Even When It's Scary
Dr. King’s success came from collective action and unwavering courage. He inspired people to believe that their voices mattered and their actions could create change. To believe his actions could help create change. In visibility, courage means showing up even when fear tries to hold you back:
- Start with one small, courageous step. Share a story, post your thoughts, or reach out to someone in your network. Progress doesn’t come from waiting—it comes from action.
We were determined not to let any act of violence keep us from our goal. We knew our lives could be threatened, but we had made up our minds not to turn back.
— Congressman John Robert Lewis
