Your marketing plan isn’t the problem.
I know, that’s probably not what you were expecting to hear. You’ve been told a thousand times that if you just tweak your strategy, post more often, or finally nail that perfect brand voice, the clients will come pouring in.
But what if I told you that the real issue isn’t what you’re doing—it’s how you’re thinking?
Think about it: you’ve got the skills, the knowledge, the drive. You’ve even got the tools. But deep down, you’re holding back.
Maybe it’s fear of being judged. Or the nagging thought that you’re not good enough. Or maybe you’ve convinced yourself that the success you dream of is meant for someone else—not you.
Let’s stop right there.
You’ve got what it takes. The problem isn’t your marketing plan—it’s the stories you’re telling yourself about who you are and what you deserve.
Let’s talk about it.
How Your Inner Critic Sabotages Your Visibility
You know the critic I’m talking about right? That negative voice in your head . . . the one that always says things like:
- You’re not ready yet.
- “What if people think you’re a fraud?
- You’re too old, or too fat or not pretty enough, or whatever it is you’re telling yourself.
That voice is your inner critic, and it’s running the show.
Which means that you could have the most brilliant marketing strategy in the world, but if you don’t believe in yourself, if you’re telling yourself that you’re not enough – then you’ll never fully show up.
And when you don’t show up, your ideal clients don’t see you. It’s that simple.
Why Visibility Feels So Hard
Visibility isn’t about shouting from the rooftops or crafting the perfect Instagram reel. It’s about stepping into your light and letting people see the real you.
And let’s be honest: that’s scary.
Because doing that requires vulnerability. It means risking rejection. It means believing that who you are—right now, flaws and all—is enough.
That’s where the real work begins. When you can do that work, your marketing plan becomes something you can actually implement effectively.
Three Mindset Shifts to Boost Your Visibility
- Challenge Your Inner Critic:
Next time that inner voice says “you can’t” challenge it by saying “Sure I can, I’m learning how.” Because the truth is nobody starts out as an expert. Every visible, successful person you admire was once exactly where you are. - Celebrate Your Differences:
The things that make you unique – your quirks, your lived experiences, those are the things that create your unique perspectives and insights. And they are your greatest strengths. So stop trying to fit in and learn to embrace them. Ask yourself: “What do I bring to the table that nobody else does?” Then own it. - Start Small:
Visibility doesn’t mean going viral overnight. It means taking one small, courageous step at a time. Write a post, share a story, comment on someone else’s content. Every small action builds momentum. The Clients You’re Meant to Serve Are Waiting. And the truth is you don’t need a new marketing plan. You need the courage to step into your light.

I’m not into marketing but I live for challenges. That how I got my declutter and reorganizing completed. I set a goal and challenge myself, sometimes it’s only a small challenge but I don’t quit until I’m finished.
I love it Martha, challenging yourself is a great way to grow.
I agree with so much of this, especially as an indie author. It’s so difficult to believe in yourself and your marketing to keep going when you compete daily with so many releases (thousands)
